We
have often heard about people complaining about kidney stones and the elaborate
procedures to get rid of them from the body. Before we get into details about
kidney stones, we need to first know what they actually are.
What
are kidney stones?
The
kidneys are one of the most important organs in the body. The inner walls of
the kidneys often have the tendency to attract dissolved materials in the body
which eventually get accumulated on the wall. These deposits, over a period of
time, might prove to be very harmful for the body. This becomes worse when they
keep increasing in size and can enlarge into the size of a golf ball.
Kidney
stone formation
Kidney
stones have no single definite cause to form within the walls of the kidneys.
In fact, they might be formed due to various reasons. The most common reason is
the presence of crystal forming substances within the urine. These would
include oxalates, calcium and uric acid which cannot be diluted by the urine
fluid. These get accumulated along the walls of the kidneys.
When
we are talking about getting rid of kidney stones or preventing their
formation, we need to look into the different types of stones. This will give
us an idea of solving the issue.
Kidneystone formation – types:
- Calcium stones: Calcium stones form the most common type of kidney stones. These are formed due to the presence of calcium in the body, especially calcium oxalate. It is a known fact that a lot of fruits, vegetables and other edibles come enriched with oxalate. This leads to the formation of kidney stones.
- Struvite stones: This is the more dangerous type of kidney stone. These stones are formed as a result of an infection like urinary tract infection or the likes. These have the potential to quickly grow big in size and become harmful for the body.
- Uric acid stones: These stones are formed in those people who do not have sufficient fluids in the body, owing to a lower consumption of water or excessive perspiration.
- Crystine stones: this is more of a hereditary issue that is caused by the excessive secretion of some amino acids in the kidneys.
Kidney stones need to be dealt with as soon as
they are formed. It is imperative to consult a doctor and start the treatment
immediately in order to prevent further damage to the body.
